Anyone visiting Australia has heard about dingoes and most visitors know that Fraser Island is a common place to see dingoes in the wild. Although dingoes can be found all over Australia, it’s believed that the dingoes of Fraser Island are the most ‘pure’ example, as many of them found on the mainland have previously bred with domestic dogs.
There has always been a lot of controversy about dingoes. They have been known to attack people and animals and some say they should all killed. However they have been around in Australia for several thousand years and it’s thought they arrived with humans from southeast Asia, so it’s probably fair to say they have as much right as humans to live peacefully in their adopted land.
Any wild animal has the potential to attack humans and other animals. It’s normal behaviour for undomesticated animals. So with any wild animal dingoes should always be treated with respect and humans should not put themselves in any unnecessary danger. Have a read of our Dingo do’s and don’ts for some simple ways to avoid a confrontation and to remain safe (this also helps to protect the dingo’s).
If you’re sensible you’ll be able to enjoy the sight of the ‘purest’ dingoes on Fraser Island and you may be lucky enough to see some of their cute puppies!
