After slightly more than a month the big moment was finally there. I went to Fraser Island, the largest sand island in the world! There are so many good stories going on, and as it is one of the highlights of the east coast I was really looking forward to it.

We first got a day-before-meeting in order to get provided with all the necessary information for our trip. The group was split up into two parts, one who would drive with the guide and the other one with one of us driving who is above 21 and has a international driving license. And guess what? I was the lucky one who would be allowed to drive (sorry for the others ). After the meeting we all went to get provisions in order to have enough for our big trip the next day.

The next morning at 7am (so nothing for long-sleeper) we gathered for the final briefing with our guide Tony. He told us all about what we were going to see in the next three days! We were also prepared for the dingo’s on the island and we got to see a safety DVD. On Fraser Island it’s only allowed to drive by 4wd and driving through loose sand is a completely different thing than the well known paved roads!

Once we arrived on the island we were all pretty flabbergasted. Wow, this is freaking cool! First we went to the K’Gari Campsite to drop our stuff and had some lunch. We quickly ate a sandwich and jumped into the car.

The first lake we went to was Lake Wabby. In the meantime the sun finally came through, and once we arrived at the lake everyone was immediately in the water. Ooh this was refreshing! After a while it was time to move to the next destination. Now it was my turn!! So I crawled behind the steering wheel to drive to Lake Garawongera.

Wow this was amazing, those tires digging trough the loose sand while keeping the car on the track driving through holes and curves. When we arrived at the lake we still had to do a small boardwalk. After ten minutes of walking we arrived at the end of the path were the trees made space for… a huge area of just sand. But where was the lake…? After a better look we saw some water in the distance! Rolling down the sand dunes into the water. What a relief!

After a nice swim we went back in the car and back to camp. Driving on the beach we saw a Braun specter rising, the first dingo! For those who are not familiar with dingos, they are wild dogs which are living on Fraser Island. They are wild but not eminently dangerous. Everyone went quickly out of the car for some photos seeing the dingo pulverizing a coconut, which was washed ashore.

Once back at the campsite, everyone was quite exhausted and ready for a drink. Yea everyone got on to some beers and goon! Not long till the drinking games started and everyone was laughing. Some walked down to the stoves where the mince was cooking and the water was simmering for the spaghetti. We had a great dinner and some more drinks. I probably don’t need to tell you how the night went on but it ended all sitting around the campfire.

The next day was another full program. We first went to the champagne pools. This is a place in the north of the island, with rocks scattered on the beach. When the tide comes in, the waves are hitting the rocks which results in some water holes with sparkling water (Yeah I was kinda hoping to have some real champagne-but no).

Next up to Indian Head where we did a steep boardwalk to the top. It’s named Indian Head cause this part of the island a protrusion is in the shape of a head. Arrived at the top it was definitely worth it, an incredible view over a part of the island. The next stop was the Maheno shipwreck. A huge rusty ship what’s on the beach not long after World War 1. We continued the day with a nice walk through the the largest area of sand on the island. It’s quite indescribable but it’s a place were the wind, daily blowing in the same wind direction, has made a massive sandy surface with sand dunes.

We ended the day with Lake Allom where we even got to see some turtles (I like turtles!!) and rounded this awesome second day up in Eli Creek were we were floating on tubes along the fresh water river. Back at the campsite, the barbeque got lighted and we started the night were we had ended it the night before.

On the third and already last day on Fraser Island we started the morning with sand boarding from one of those sand dunes we had seen the day before. After a hard climb with body board I had to breath through for a moment before I lay down on my belly, head forward and goooo! Awesome! We continued our way to a rainforest where we have took a nice relaxing hike.

And then last but not least, perhaps the highlight of the trip, Lake McKenzie! Such clear water you won’t see often in your life! Crystal clear spring water, which of course had to be drunk! While you had to squeeze your eyes cause of the sun glistened on those unbelievable white beach we all took a big sip. Here we spent the last hours to just dream around and purely enjoy. Time to leave Fraser Island!! Sad as everyone was we drove back to the ferry.

Back at the hostel and after a nice shower, we ended the trip with a delicious dinner and a toast.

Thanks to Nomads Fraser Island Tours for such an amazing experience! Thumbs up!

Anyone visiting Australia has heard about dingoes and most visitors know that Fraser Island is a common place to see dingoes in the wild. Although dingoes can be found all over Australia, it’s believed that the dingoes of Fraser Island are the most ‘pure’ example, as many of them found on the mainland have previously bred with domestic dogs.

There has always been a lot of controversy about dingoes. They have been known to attack people and animals and some say they should all killed. However they have been around in Australia for several thousand years and it’s thought they arrived with humans from southeast Asia, so it’s probably fair to say they have as much right as humans to live peacefully in their adopted land.

Any wild animal has the potential to attack humans and other animals. It’s normal behaviour for undomesticated animals. So with any wild animal dingoes should always be treated with respect and humans should not put themselves in any unnecessary danger. Have a read of our Dingo do’s and don’ts for some simple ways to avoid a confrontation and to remain safe (this also helps to protect the dingo’s).

If you’re sensible you’ll be able to enjoy the sight of the ‘purest’ dingoes on Fraser Island and you may be lucky enough to see some of their cute puppies!
