Fraser Island from the Indian Head

Fraser Island

Gidday

Nomads Fraser Island Tours in January have been awesome despite the recent Queensland floods & cyclones. Every tour starts at 6.45 am.

After  the morning instructions we head for the ferry to Fraser Island.

We all sit on the top deck of the ferry so we could enjoy the views across the bay. After landing on Fraser Island a final check that everybody & 4wd’s are set for the journey ahead.

The first stop after half an hour of rough roads & tense fingers from hanging on in the  4WD’s', we arrive at Lake Birrabeen for a swim, then to Central Station for lunch.

After lunch a walk along the creek boardwalk where fish & other local creatures are seen and also some relics of the past.

From there we travel to the Eastern beach for about a 40 minute walk through a typical Australian bush with eucalyptus & Banksia trees every where and Cycads & ferns on the ground.

Breathtaking views are seen on entry to Hammerstone sandblow and then a short walk over the shifting sands to Lake Wabby for another refreshing swim before heading back.

The drive to K’gari campsite is usually slow with washouts & foam everywhere from the rough surf. On arrival at the camp all formalities are quickly done then a BBQ dinner is underway. After dinner all food boxes are packed away before the party games begin into the early hours of the next morning.

Day 2 starts with breakfast at around 7.am and at 8.30 we head off to the beach to check out the Maheno shipwreck , and then a drive to the  Pinnacles, Red Canyon and stopping at Champagne pools for a cooling swim in the ocean rock pools. After feeling refreshed  it is a short drive to Woddy Point picnic area for lunch.

Next stop is Indian Head, a brief explanation of the cultural history then a walk to the top with  views to the north & south which are spectacular not to mention the marine life that surfaces at times.

The trip back down the beach is smooth with the tide at its lowest. About  40 minutes drive later we turn off the beach to head inland to Lake Allom, a very rough track with all everyone in the 4×4’s hanging on. At the lake everyone goes for a swim in the tanin stained waters. This is a cool way to end the day.

On arrival back at camp at 5.30 pm the gas burners were cranked up for a pasta meal fit for kings & queens (yum).

Around 10 pm  all headed down to the beach  the night chandelier of stars are magnificent with the moon  starting to rise above the horizon.

Day 3 started at 7 am breakfast & packing for the return journey First stop is Eli Creek. We’re the first ones there with all the fish & other creatures  around its a magnificent walk with nature.

Lake McKenzie was the next & last stop for our trip. Its 2 hours of pure relaxation on the beach, swimming in the fresh water. After lunch we load  the 4×4’s for the last part of our trip back to Nomads Hervey Bay backpackers hostel. After unpacking, a long shower, cool drink with the group and some funny stories of the trip over dinner.

See you there
