Fraser Island: Tag Along VS Guided Tours

So you’re planning to book your Fraser Island tour? Much of the island’s attraction is its official ‘sandy highway.’ As the world’s largest sand island you really need at least 2 to 3 days to see the major attractions. The most common way to get around is by a 4X4 vehicle. Here’s how to choose which type of Fraser Island tour is best for you.

Tag Along Tours

Most adventure, backpacker and budget travelers will usually travel Fraser Island by a Tag-Along tour. The way it works? You will explore the island in a ‘convoy’ of 4WD vehicles with a lead a tour driver leading the way. If you have a license you can choose to drive one of the vehicles. Imagine, the windows down and cruising along Fraser Island’s 75-mile beach!

The Tag Along tours usually includes accommodation on the mainland (usually in Noosa, Rainbow Beach or Hervey Bay) the night before and after the tour. The day before you depart you get to meet the group while attending a briefing where you will be provided with maps, permits, ferry transfers and food options – a great way to meet other travelers!

You then get to drive the vehicles to the ferry terminal and en route to the island. Most of the Tag Along tours will include camping or resort accommodation on the island (Nomads include accommodation at Eurong Resort.

Guided Tours

Guided Tours are a great option if you are on a very strict timeline, as you usually do not have to attend a briefing the day before departure. Some of the tours allow a pick up in one location and a drop off in another. For example, you could begin your tour in Brisbane and finish it in Rainbow Beach.

Guided tours usually depart from Brisbane, Noosa, Rainbow Beach or Hervey Bay. Your tour begins with pick up from your accommodation (dependent on tour). Mode of tour is on a 4WD bus and you have a tour guide onboard to provide commentary of each of the locations.

Guided tours are usually fully inclusive of food and accommodation is usually at a resort (although there are some guided camping tours available).

Whatever tour type you choose – you are sure to enjoy your Fraser Island experience!
