The weather on Fraser Island: The best times to visit

Before we get started we must point out that it is ALWAYS a good time to visit Fraser Island. Located in sunny Queensland, you can expect warm weather on the island almost all year round. However like the rest of Australia, Queensland does have its seasons. To ensure that you are well packed and prepared for your Fraser Island tour, here is a complete guide to Fraser Island’s weather and the best times of the year to visit.

Located in southern Queensland, Fraser Island sits around 300km north of Brisbane and 1600km south of Cairns. Due to its prime location, Fraser Island attracts maritime subtropical weather. What does that mean you ask? It means that for almost every day of the year you will be welcomed by warm and humid weather accompanied by a cool ocean breeze – heaven!

Summer (December to February):

You can expect hot, humid and sometimes wet weather on Fraser Island throughout Australia’s summer season. Luckily for you, there are loads of stunning swimming spots and rainforest creeks to cool off in. The average temperature is 29°C in summer and you can also expect warm weather throughout the night with temperatures of around 22°C. Although this is the hottest time of the year to visit the island, it is also the time of year that attracts the most of amount of rainfall, especially in January and February – so make sure you pack a lightweight, quick drying rain jacket (or poncho). Oh… and mosquito spray!

Autumn (March to May):

Autumn is a comfortable time of the year to explore Fraser Island, with high temperatures, yet lower levels of rainfall and humidity than in summer. If travelling in March, the expectance of rainfall is still rather high so make sure you pack a quick drying, light weight, waterproof jacket. You can expect an average temperature of around 23°C.

Winter (June to August):

Whale Season! Every year from July to November you may be able to see the Humpback Whales on the shores of Fraser Island as they make their way along the coast. We love travelling Fraser Island in winter as the temperatures are still warm (yes… flip flop, shorts and jumper kind of weather). There is little rainfall and the humidity is low. Average temperature is around 18°C however it does usually peak to around 22°C. It can get a little cool at night so remember to pack a jumper.

Spring (September to November):

Spring is a great time of the year to visit Fraser Island. Leading into summer, the temperatures begin to rise (as well as the humidity levels). There is little chance of rainfall in September and October and the average temperature ranges from 24°C to 27°C (it can still get a little cold at night).

To sum it up, it’s always a great idea to visit Fraser Island! However to prepare for the sometimes unpredictable Australian weather, always pack a jumper, a waterproof jacket, closed shoes, insect repellent and of course, sunscreen!
